This role is on an "as needed" basis and is only able to substitute if a regular substitute with a teaching certificate is not available.  Positions may be in-person at a school building even during remote learning periods.

 

Position Summary:

 

Creates and maintains a safe, positive learning environment working as an emergency substitute teacher in the Mercer Island School District. This is a "day of” position that substitutes for certificated classroom teachers on Mercer Island, typically working within twenty-four hours of notice of the vacancy.

• Works on an on-call basis often times with short notice as an emergency substitute for the regular classroom teacher
• Fosters and manages a safe, positive learning environment for all students
• Supervises student behavior and enforces the rules and regulations of the school and District
• Maintains appropriate student discipline consistent with District policies and procedures
• Implements lesson plans following direction left by the classroom teacher
• Motivates and engages students in learning
• Adjusts instruction and modifies lesson plans based on student needs
• Maintains cooperative working relationships with students, parents, District staff, and the community
• Uses software and equipment for educational uses and in accordance with District policies
• Adheres to the Code of Professional Conduct, District policies and procedures, and State/Federal laws and regulations
• Duties directly related to purpose of job

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Successful completion of Mercer Island School District’s required training for emergency substitutes
  • Washington State Emergency Substitute Teaching Certificate (not required for application; District will assist all hired candidates to obtain the necessary certificate)
  • Significant positive experience working with young people
  • A calm positive demeanor to maintain order and continue the learning process for students.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of developmental needs of students within assigned age range
  • Knowledge of subject matter content and pedagogy

EMERGENCY SUBSTITUTE TRAINING PROGRAM

 

Have you thought of becoming a substitute teacher, yet are lacking a current Washington State teaching credential?  Mercer Island School District is looking for community members who want to make a difference in our students’ lives and are excited about joining the District as Emergency Substitute Teachers.

 

As an Emergency Substitute Teacher, you will be working on-call, sometimes with short notice, substituting for a regular classroom teacher.  You will be maintaining a safe, positive learning environment while implementing the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher to provide valuable learning experiences for students. 

 

Minimum criteria to apply:

  • Willingness to start initially as a substitute paraprofessional with Mercer Island School District while you gain the emergency substitute certification
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with young people
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students and adults clearly and confidently
  • Ability to use computers and technical equipment
  • Available to work on-call

With our District’s support, you can apply to obtain your Emergency Substitute Teaching certificate through the State of Washington. After completing the application process and prior to your first substituting assignment, the District will require completion of an online training program and provide on-site district related training. The training is designed to benefit you to be successful in the areas of classroom management, lesson plan implementation, school and district procedures, educator professionalism and standards of conduct, and legal issues.

 

Please note that Emergency Substitutes may only be utilized if a regular certified substitute is not available.  This may be for several days a month or just one day now and then.

 

Process Steps:

  1. Complete the online application for substitute paraprofessional AND emergency substitute.
  2. Upon application pre-screening verification, you will receive an email invitation to interview, and then participate in a brief interview with Human Resources.
  3. Following a successful interview, you will be advised to take the online substitute course. 
  4. Once your fingerprints have cleared and your certificate has been issued, we will conduct a district orientation and you will complete and submit your hiring forms.
  5. Finally, you will begin accepting classroom substitute teaching assignments.
